gathering a few small things...

A small, handmade thing

Happy Birthday,
Reezqah.

There are people who pass through our lives. Then there are people who quietly become part of our story.

Chapter One

A Few Things I Haven't Forgotten

  1. Three years ago

    We became friends

Not in any dramatic way. Just one ordinary conversation that, somehow, never really ended.

  2. Somewhere in year two

The day I convinced you I'd been arrested

I still think about your reaction more than I probably should. I'm sorry. I'm not that sorry 😂

  3. Mostly all the time, honestly

All the conversations about nothing in particular

The ones that started as a question and turned into an hour. Those were never really about nothing.

  4. More than once

The hard days you made lighter without trying

You never knew you were doing it. That's kind of the whole point of you 🥺

  5. Today

Still here. Still glad about it.

Three years in, and I'd still pick the ordinary conversation that started all of this.

Chapter Two

Our Story, Drawn

"Some memories aren't captured by a camera. They're remembered by the heart."

A hand-drawn pencil sketch of Reezqah in her graduation cap and gown standing beside her best friend, surrounded by pressed flowers, small stars, and handwritten notes reading 'three years of friendship, countless memories, and so much more to come' and 'thank you for being part of my story' — a memory imagined and drawn rather than photographed.

Not every picture needs a camera.

Some moments are remembered differently.

If friendship could be sketched instead of photographed, I think this is how I'd remember ours.

Thank you for making the last three years brighter than you probably realize.

Reezqah,

I don't really know how to start this without it sounding like every other birthday message you'll get today, so I'll just say the true thing first: I'm grateful. Genuinely, specifically grateful, for three years of a friendship I didn't plan for and wouldn't trade.

I'm proud of you, too, in a way that's hard to explain without sounding like I'm handing you an award. You've built a kind of steadiness in yourself, a way of moving through hard things without losing the soft parts, and I don't think you give yourself enough credit for that. I notice it. I've noticed it for a long time.

Your kindness isn't the loud kind. It shows up in the small, almost invisible ways, remembering something I mentioned once in passing, checking in at exactly the right, unglamorous moment. I don't think you do it to be noticed. I think that's just who you are underneath everything else. I want you to know it hasn't gone unnoticed anyway.

I hope this year is gentle with you. You spend so much of your energy making things easier for other people, I hope some of that comes back around. You deserve a happiness that isn't complicated, that doesn't ask you to earn it first.

And I hope, whatever else changes, you never lose that light you carry, the one that makes ordinary rooms feel a little warmer just because you're in them. Some people search for that their whole lives. You just have it.

Whether life takes us in the same direction, or different ones, I'm thankful our paths crossed at all.

Happy birthday.

— someone who's glad they know you

Happy Birthday, Reezqah.

Thank you for being part of my story.

Until the next chapter...

May every wish find its way to you. 🤍
